What Are Emotions – Feelings?

What are emotions? What are feelings?
“Woke up in the morning, I felt tired and desperately needed a cup of coffee. The coffee woke me up a bit. It was a beautiful, sunny day outside. I really wish I could go out and enjoy the sunshine but I can’t -simply because I have to go to work. I felt so disappointed. During the day I was happy because work kept me busy. Work helps me forget about other things in my life. I felt excited.

I went for a walk during lunch along the waterfront. I felt so relaxed.  Evenings are the worst time for me. I often dreamed of having a loving wife and a couple of beautiful kids so that I would not feel so lonely and my life would be more fulfilled ...”

See, people have emotions all the time, feeling tired, disappointed, happy, excited, relaxed, lonely and fulfilled.  These emotions are normal and bring meaning to our lives human beings. Different people have different emotions or feelings in different situations. Emotions are our most reliable indicators of how things are going on in our lives.

You're absolutely right about the feelings. They tell us how things are going and there's usually a lot of them throughout the day. I find this a fascinating subject because feelings are like a guage of what's going on in our lives. I honor all feelings including the negative ones because they also tell us about who we are. I've been going through a rough time recently but I allow myself to feel it in order to vent, let it out and hopefully better understand myself. It's important though to allow new ideas to come in and challenge the old ones so that there are alternatives. Sometimes I think it's a bit overwhelming to have so many feelings throughout the day but I also think that it's a great way to determine what's going on, consider the options and make changes that help me to experience more pleasant feelings.
